This recipe for baked french fries turns the classic American treat into a healthy choice while still being super delicious.
French fries are a classic American food. I’ve noticed that at any American style restaurant they’re on the menu. Classic, animal style, curly, or even sweet potato fries, my personal favorite. Doesn’t matter what type, one of them is always on the menu. There are so many different styles of fries and they all vary pretty largely but, they all have one thing in common.
They’re unhealthy! They are soaked in oil and are really over salted.
Now don’t get me wrong, I do really enjoy a nice deep fried French fry but, for the sake of my figure, I can’t allow myself to have them as much as I would like to.😂
Well today, we’re solving that issue with baked French fries!! They are healthy and are lower on fat and salt but are still DELICIOUS! In my mind, they’re like little crispy bits of heaven. 😉
You may be wondering how to achieve the perfect baked French fries? Here’s exactly how.
Pre-Bake
I wash, peel, and slice my potatoes into a fry shape, like everyone else does, but then I add in an extra step. Soaking my potatoes in water. I know it sounds kinda weird but, there’s scientific reasoning behind it! 🙂
In this recipe, we use russet potatoes. Those are naturally a pretty starchy potato. Soaking cut up slices of the potato in water for at least 30 minutes takes some of the starch out. This allows the potatoes to get that crispness around the edges that we all know and love!
Baking
Baking cut up potatoes can be a bit of a challenge. The first time I baked little potato cubes when I was like 10 years old, I forgot that potatoes stick to the pan.🤦♀️ When I pulled them out of the oven, they were completely glued to the pan! Dinner that night ended up being some leftovers from the night before.😂
I don’t want you to go through the same thing that I did. It’s not a fun experience. The way to work around it is parchment paper! It’s grown to be one of my favorite tools in the kitchen. I put a sheet of this on the bottom of the pan with a drizzle of olive oil and all my problems are solved.
No more stuck potatoes! 🙂
Moving the potatoes around while cooking is also really important! You want crispy potatoes but now burned ones. Moving them around will make sure that they don’t burn.
Bake Sweet Potato Fries Recipe
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F. Wash, peel, and slice the potatoes into even-sized fry pieces. Let them soak in water for at least 30 minutes or up to 12 hours. When done, drain the water, drizzle them with a little bit of oil, and add salt and garlic powder.
On a baking sheet, put a large piece of parchment paper and a drizzle a little bit more oil. Spread out all the potatoes on this baking sheet so they lie completely flat. (Use 2 baking sheets if necessary.)
Put it into the oven for about an hour, or until the potatoes are soft. Be sure to flip them every 15 minutes to keep form burning. Let cool for a couple of minutes then serve! Enjoy! <3

Note
- Cooking time is going to depend on what size you cut your potato slices. Begin with 15 minutes, mix them around so they don’t burn, then repeat until they are soft.
